Being Idle @ Work

Posted on 13. Jan, 2009 by Musaed in Short Articles, Work

its really hard to burn 6-8 hours of your day doing nothing, there is something about the work environment that force you to want to work. even if you are an active person, you can only feel normal if you are working. However, when sitting in such environment with no work, you just sit still and you simply cannot do anything else.

think of it like sea of water, people go there to swim, if you cant swim you simply drawn, there is nothing else you can do, unless you have a boat (an office) then you can escape.

so why is it we feel this way? first of all, the general mode is:

everyone else is working

everyone is typing

everyone is talking work

everyone is in and out of meeting

BUT NOT YOU

you are simply out of place. Now, if you try to read something, the feeling of guilt and the sense “wasting time” sinks in and you just feel bad. you brush it off and put your nose back into your book, but you still feel awkward, especially when you get that half a stair from people walking by. Newspapers are out of the question, you’re better off hinging a sign saying “will work for nothing” so that’s out of the window.

the next thing is you try to fill your inside with the aroma of coffee and tea, you start off with “black, no sugar”, then you move to “with milk and little sugar”, then you wash it with “some water”, and move on to “tea”, all the sudden, the office boy becomes your best friend, and you know you are bugging him when he start knowing your drink before you ask.

you try to chit chat with your busy neighbor, and out of his/her kind heart try to be polite and give you a minute or two, once you start to push it, the important phone call/email will arrive and steal him/her away.

so now you look around, the office boy looks the other way avoiding you, you start looking at the door, you look at your watch, your heart sinks, and you decides to browse the net, only to find that you have such a slow connection that remind you of the dial up days.

your last resort is your mobile, you know you have no new SMS, but you still check it anyway, as if you are imposing your well and applying “the Secret” to receive a new message, and it’s not working. That’s when your body act out of mercy to your mind, calls you for a bathroom break! You run to the bathroom to find it occupied.

you wait, you go in, you come out…..with all determination to find… that damn office boy again
