On a smaller scale, it could be done by paid militia by certain ISPs to force the MoC to alleviate its ancient grip from controlling the cables; something which if accomplished, should bring down the prices of Internet subscription heavily as the MoC charges absurd amounts to lease the cables to ISPs.

Also, when the MoC’s shadow is no longer, ISPs will be able to lay out proper resilient infrastructure with multiple hops to multiple countries.

Excellent topic. Sadly, after 50 years of monopoly, add to it the established links and political power of the current cinema owner, it has become a rather loosing gamble to go head to head with the current Cinema, for reasons you mostly nailed out, but I emphasize on:

1- Location: Cinescape have all the good spots, and won’t let go of any new coming. They can afford it more financially and politically. Building your own place is quite a big investment, and while it has it’s advantages, investors in Kuwait are usually looking for much shorted pay back period.

2- Links and power: Say you build your cinema and want to compete. I bet it’s easy for Cinescape to gain exclusive rights for all blockbuster movies. And if you see, only a couple of movies every week gain public attention. (Speaking of Hollywood movies only here)

I would have to strongly argue about the established fan base, as I and many others are quite ready to try any alternative. I have already cut down my visits to Kuwait cinema greatly. I go when there is blockbuster movie I cant wait to see, or am too afraid someone will spoil it! Otherwise I have large LCD screen, home theater system, and Bluray movies to enjoy at home.

I’m sure there is a fan base for old movies, and I for one would love to see Godfather trilogy on the big screens. Not only that old, but I fancy watching Pirates of Caribbean trilogy once more in higher quality, or even the same. I had this thought for years… why not give time for old movies rather than bring 2/10 rated IMDB ones that nobody goes to.

But the fact is, fanbase in that case will be limited. For example, I think seats would be empty during the week for such marathons or old classics, but would get crowded on weekends. Each show is an added extra cost on the company. I usually go to movies at noon and it’s relatively quite because people consider it early. 9 or 10 AM would suit me alright, but it won’t pay their bills I’m afraid.

But a small start, with some focused attention on customers, unlike how Cinescape treats them, have taste in movies, and why not provide a decent censorship. Have you seen One and MBC movie censoring? It’s quite nicely done, whereas in Cinescape, you see talking scenes censored, and even the transition from one scene to the other feels like it’s been cut before, and then glued back. And lastly, you must’ve seen Avatar in IMAX. How did you like the censorship?

VIP or not, I’d rather pay a bit more to get a decent movie version, and if a company is welling to take that responsibility, and have dignity in doing it, I bet many people would choose it over Cinescape.

I start my own journey when I was 18 years old. I discovered that our people are willing to buy every common thing; especially if it’s related to the basic human need (check Maslow’s hierarchy of needs). Now, I’m thinking of rebuild my commercial empire so I start it with two sweatshirts from GAP. Guys I use the word of mouth then I kept it on my closet, I sell one and the other one is reserved for one of my friend who insist to buy it with higher price than online. Finally, in Kuwait you can even sell sand, so don’t be afraid from the loose because you have to believe on your fate.

After years in corporate sector, I am now on my own for approximately a year. Perhaps I have taken a different path into the web entrepreneurship, rather than build my own physical corporation, but we still have a lot in common.

To sum my choice:

1- As technical person, you’re always on call. Even after 1.5 years, when you take a leave, I receive missed calls and SMS at 3:30 AM!

2- Intensive politics life: After more than 2 years in my previous company, I looked at my manager and knew I don’t wanna end up in his seat. So I’m walking in the wrong direction.

3- Flexible hours: I always had an issue for early morning, and I manage to twist my sleep hours all the time.

4- Be Your Own Boss: No one telling you what to do, and you don’t have to complain and say “Why don’t they do it this way” Cause now, you get to do it the way you like, and you bare the consequences.

5- Experience: Rather than wasting time doing what other people want, you get to do it all, and do all you like, invest in what really motivates you.

6- Hobby Job: The quote I read once says it all. “If you have a hobby, and you find a way to make money out of it, then you never have to work again for the rest of your life.”

Now after a year, I can’t say I’m settled yet. I am doing fine thank God, but you have to keep expanding and adding, you have to make more than regular day job since it’s not secured, so if things go bad, you should’ve made already more than your regular pay check.

But I’m happy I’m taking this journey. Something not quite common in Kuwait, but quite popular outside as I have seen in a recent conference in Europe (You have to sponsor yourself ofcourse for such events).

Parents and society aren’t much open here for such routes. When you say online business they would think it’s kind of a fraud, or the least will think it can’t suffice for life demands.

Credit cards, loans, and some official papers are also difficult to make when you’re not officially affiliated with any firm and/or don’t have monthly regular paychecks. Our country simply isn’t so open to the free work spirit. You either have a job, or a business. Else, you are retired!

Good luck with your venture and hope you find the joy and success within it.

Well, actually, that is the icing on the cake. Look at what yobbish behaviour by English youths taking food and drink with them inside the tube has done to the London underground. Hi thought has been proved these days when you see people are never satisfied with what they receive as an income.

And this caused people to lock themselves into debt and then seek government help to waive their debt or increase their income, but I think this wont solve the problem as again according to Adam Smith thought humans are greed!!

No one should blame the government because if the government waive or increase people income, then the problem wont be solved for ever as the situation will be repeated again and again!!!

The solution should be that people should be responsible to look after their finances and spend within their budget not over spending!!!!!

I belive the environment around people would be the main factor that effect people attitude towards their life and how to approach.

I kuwait the main cause is people around you who may always complain and want to change their life despite being a great standard in comparison with other nations across the world.

Look at people in the west who are usually spending most of their days at work, education and self developement which thats contrbuite to help people in these countries to lead the world in terms of productivity, success and grwoth!!

If poeple apply in other countries e.g. kuwait do this then poeple would have a life free of chaos!!

I dont think the 2nd option would solve the problem because its likely to have the same problem with other manager.

I genral i believe the manager who behave this way do not deserve this position!!

Its obvious hard to live in a place that is similar like to live two contradicts that you have to stay in a job that you do not like to live in forever. And, you can never leave it as to the benefits that you got. In addition, to the unability to find a similar benefits in the opportunities available around. Also, you might you be overqualified for new opportunities available.

To solve this dilema that many people feel working in ministries and private companies in Kuwait and might be every where else in the world, is to live your current job- with the headache you are in- and find the best in the job, and try to enjoy the best of it. And, try to search for new – side dish – activity and part time work that satisfy your inner personality. Its not easy but you should get the best of every moment in your live, and do not waste your time blaming yourself and keep crying and burning your soul.
