The Lost Identity!!!!!!!!!

Ok this is not a title for new movie, nor is it an attention grabber for a new book. This is how I like to, unfortunately, label DUBAI. Yes, you read it right DUBAI.

My private business requires lots of frequent traveling to almost everywhere and today I am in Dubai for the night until early morning then off to China. I had three business meetings and at least two of them were very crucial to the future of my private business. Now someone would assume that two out of the three meetings should be with the locals, but that someone should assume again. Three out of three were with highly regarded Indian businessmen.

Do not jump the gun, I know when it comes to healthy business life a country should give the way to foreign investors to spend their money in its land. However, when that country gives the future of its people to the hands of foreigners without calculating the risk of one day these heavy investors could leave to another country for the simplest reason then I see a problem.

I love Kuwait more than any other, but I have a strong reason to care for Dubai and other GCC countries or cities. When you lose your identity in the name of business, I think you already lost everything with it. The funniest thing was when I was talking to an Australian friend of mine about Dubai two years ago, she told me that she feels more homesick when she goes home (Melbourne, Australia) simply because she sees more people from the Emirates than she does in Dubai.

I hope that Dubai flourish more and more but at the same time preserve the true identity of its history, culture and people.

God bless Dubai and KUWAIT……

Makers & Shakers!!!!

Few days ago, a friend of mine asked how much influence political turmoil has on business stability and economy?. I thought to myself good question but has nothing to do with us in Kuwait since we -thank god- have no such political turmoil to begin with. Then I had a deeper look into his question and went “oh yes brother we sure do“!!!! Maybe not as obvious as the problems in Pakistan or even Lebanon, but we do…..

Now the question again was how much influence political turmoil has on business stability and economy?.

The body causing this political turmoil in Kuwait is the PARLIMENT and I am sure to most of you this did not come as a surprise. We all agree on one principle and that is Kuwait needs bright brains and fresh blood to get back to the so-called Golden Age by re-establishing Kuwait as the Pearl of the Gulf. This can only be possible if three major criterions are made available:

1- Decision makers in which the government has the sole responsibility to assure the right decisions are made and implemented.
2- Parliament members acting as the channel where all decisions must go and discussed among the members to achieve satisfaction and maximize the benefits.
3- Bright minded people to appreciate and follow the decisions without abusing their rights or freedom.

Kuwait has all of the above. HOWEVER, when it comes to the second criteria members of the parliament act as decision SHAKERS and not wise men as the newspapers like to call them!!!!!!!

So the question still stands, do we really have political turmoil in this democratic country? Moreover, my question is do we really need this parliament? Are we better off without it? Are the members (a.k.a. wise men) thinking about what Kuwait really needs and not what they need?

At the end, god bless Kuwait and its people and god help us all!!!!

Hot summery topic…….

Dinar Chat & Deera Chat will alternate episodes for the entire summer, so we thought starting up our summer written post schedule with a HOT topic is the way to go. Few episodes back we mentioned something about political economy and the impact it has on our economic and daily life.

Kuwait is the ideal example of that impact. A quick look into the minor and major events in Kuwait and outside gives a true indication on how politics is a major player in today’s economy for an entire nation. Diplomatic problem between Kuwait and Iran, the threat from the parliament to question the minister of oil, oil prices, power and electricity shortages, laws and regulations, donations to poor & NOT so poor countries, speculations about dissolving the parliament, stocks and real estate status….. These are just few examples on the latest internal and external events involving Kuwait that are related in one way or another to our political economy.

The big question that all of us would like to ask but feel a bit weird to ask is ARE WE MOVING ON THE RIGHT TRACK?. I mean the Kuwaiti investment in some countries might reach something like US$ 4-6 Billions. On the other hand, foreign investments in Kuwait do not exceed US$ 250 Millions. How much are we paying and how much are we getting back in return? Are we investing in countries that really worth investing in? Do we have a secure future in these countries in case something goes hey-wire? Can we trust them in case Kuwait goes into another huge problem god forbid? Are we utilizing our youth and young smart generation or are we depending on expats so much?.

The list of questions can go on and on, but I think it’s time to look deep inside ourselves and ask are we giving this country our 110% of dedication, energy, time, brain, and most of all LOYALTY?

I leave it up to you to answer and my apologies for the HOT topic ……………….
